Today at the Berkman Center, Eszter Hargittai asked about Web browsers’ address bars. For example, when did people stop having to type http:// and when did https:// first make its appearance? (Wikipedia’s entries on the address bar and HTTPS are some of the best sources I’ve found so far.) Beyond those specific questions, a more complete history of the address bar would be interesting: favicons, shortcuts, auto-completion, security status, “omnibox”, “awesomebar”, etc. Do you know of any sources or history on this question?
