Formally "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", the UK comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and is situated off the western coast of mainland Europe. It is a representative democracy governed from its capital, London. It is also a member of the European Union and NATO. The head of state is the monarch, presently Queen Elizabeth II.
