This is a guide for adopting Google Pixel Android phones for simplified use (e.g., seniors). The
2024-Dec Simple View update does
some of this, and is a good start, but is not as thorough.
Initial setup
- connect to wifi
- transfer data
- prompt/start OS and security updates
- configure UI
- put Dialer, Messages, Camera, Photos on home screen
- make everything big and loud
- enable 3-button
navigation (which also disables circle-to-search)
- configure quick settings
(removing most things)
- simplify keyboard, make larger, disable swipe/glide typing
- set power
button as power/reset screen
Accessibility > Timing Control
> Time to take Action: 30s
> Touch & Hold Delay: long
Display & touch > Screen timeout: 1 minute
Security > Screen lock > Lock after screen timeout: 30 seconds
- configure core applications
- Dialer
- make sure frequent contacts are āfavoriteā in Dialer
- confirm transportation contacts (taxi, Uber, Lyft, etc.)
- setup one or more emergency contacts
- Google

- Display > Lock Screen > Add

- install RustDesk
- configure Find

Setup with user
- confirm phone is on WiFi
- insert SIM card and confirm service
- include userās name, phone, and email in slip of paper between phone and case
- setup PIN, pattern, and fingerprint unlock
- confirm contacts
- merge and prune contacts from old phone or synced
- add frequent contacts to favorites in Dialer
- set Safety & Emergency (accessed by swipe-up on lock screen)
- set emergency contacts
- include userās birth date and blood type
- install needed applications and have user sign in
- test and demonstrate
- touching home screen apps and folder (e.g., Travel)
- 3-button navigation (back, home, and open apps)
- swipe down for quick settings and notifications
- swipe up for all apps
