Google_Pixel_For_Seniors

This is a guide for adopting Google Pixel Android phones for simplified use (e.g., seniors). The 2024-Dec Simple View update does some of this, and is a good start, but is not as thorough.

Initial setup

  1. connect to wifi
  2. transfer data
  3. prompt/start OS and security updates
  4. configure UI
    1. put Dialer, Messages, Camera, Photos on home screen
    2. make everything big and loud
    3. enable 3-button navigation (which also disables circle-to-search)
    4. configure quick settings (removing most things)
    5. simplify keyboard, make larger, disable swipe/glide typing
    6. set power button as power/reset screen
    7. Accessibility > Timing Control
      1. > Time to take Action: 30s
      2. > Touch & Hold Delay: long
    8. Display & touch > Screen timeout: 1 minute
    9. Security > Screen lock > Lock after screen timeout: 30 seconds
  5. configure core applications
    1. Dialer
      1. make sure frequent contacts are ā€œfavoriteā€ in Dialer
        • confirm transportation contacts (taxi, Uber, Lyft, etc.)
      2. setup one or more emergency contacts
    2. Google Meet: associate cellphone number
    3. Lock Screen
      1. Display > Lock Screen > Add Text : home phone and email
    4. install RustDesk
    5. configure Find My Device

Setup with user

  1. confirm phone is on WiFi
  2. insert SIM card and confirm service
  3. include user’s name, phone, and email in slip of paper between phone and case
  4. setup PIN, pattern, and fingerprint unlock
  5. confirm contacts
  6. set Safety & Emergency (accessed by swipe-up on lock screen)
  7. install needed applications and have user sign in
  8. test and demonstrate
