American [[mathematics|mathematician]], noted for showing that the negation of the [[continuum hypothesis]] was consistent with the standard axioms of [[set theory]].  In conjunction with the earlier work of [[Kurt Godel|Godel]], this showed that the continuum hypothesis was could be neither proved nor disproved from these axioms.
