Evolution

A biological concept that refers to the change in the genetic characteristics of a population over time.

Evolutionary changes are necessary for populations of organisms to adapt to their environments. If populations could not adapt to environmental changes, they would simply die out. Since in the long run environments always change, evolution is necessary for life to persist over time.

An explanation as to how evolution occurs is referred to as a theory of evolution.
