The board used in [[Chess]] consists of 8 rows and 8 columns of squares arranged in alternating colors, the most common version being [ red and black]. 

:In English commentary, the columns are labeled by the occupying piece in the original position of row 1 and the rows by the numbers 1 to 8 starting from the player's side. This means that each cell can be addressed in two ways, depending on the point of view establshed. Moves are described by indicating the piece moved and the destination cell.

:In European commentary, the columns are labeled by the letters A to H and the rows by numbers 1 to 8, thus providing a standard notation. Moves are indicated by citing the origin and destination cells.
