A term used to describe American's whose modern ancestors came from Sub-Saharan Africa.

The term has been adopted in the UnitedStates since the 1970s as the PoliticallyCorrect term for black Americans. The term is logically suspect, however, in that it attempts to define a race both in terms of race and citizenship. To illustrate the problem:

What race is WalterWilliams? African-American.

Is WalterWilliams the same race as DesmondTutu? Yes.

Is DesmondTutu African-American? No.
