Students that take their own notes and review them later benefit in many ways. There are a number of systems out there including the Cornell system, which I recommend as it prompts both distillation (e.g., key concepts), review (within 24-hour) and synthesis (i.e., writing higher-order questions and summary).

Note, research indicates that handwritten notes can yield improvements in learning as it forces deeper processing beyond the simple transcription so many people do on their laptops.
