Writing

During the course of a semester, I use of a number of in-class exercises to improve students’ writing of English.

• Writing guide and workshop: the missing college handbook (as slide deck).
  • Writing Scavenger Hunt: identify and correct problems addressed in the guide.
  • Revision: revise an assignment using the guide.
• Theses about puppies: critique and pose example theses.
• Concision #1: complete a random sample of Tony1’s exercises.
• Concision #2: tighten a verbose version of Langston Hughes’ “Harlem.”
• Cohesion: identify sentences’ topic and which paragraph is more cohesive.
• Coherence and Reverse Outlines: reverse outline a short essay.
